WEMBLEY – READY AT LAST!

Written by Mark in Sport | 3 Comments »

In 2001 Dietmar Hamann scored a goal for the German national side against England in a World Cup Qualifier. It marked the end of Kevin Keegan’s time as England manager. Aft that match the Wembley as we knew it was demolished. The story of its replacement has been riddled with failures and disappointments.

The new Wembley stadium

It was decided to demolish the old Wembley stadium and replace it with a brand new development that would serve not only football, but many other sports in the UK.

A builder was selected (Multiplex) who have built other stadiums around the world too and then work slowly began. They started building the stadium in the second half of 2003 and the completion date at that time was scheduled for January 2006.

Well more than a year late the keys are due to be handed over the the FA this Friday the 9th March 2007. The stadium has cost an estimated £757 million. A lot of money to pay out when the stadium is over a year late?

Wembley stadium photographs

For sure, looking at the photos and the text on the stadiums website it does seem clear that it will be a mighty impressive stadium – perhaps one of the best in the world, which can only be a goos thing with the Olympics coming to the UK in 2012. The FA cup final will now be held in May this year after a while at the Millennium Stadium in Cardiff.

But will the cost and the wait justify the need to building this new Wembley?

HOLLYOAKS GONE BAD?

Written by Mark in General | No Comments »

For those of you that don’t know Hollyoaks is a soap on channel 4 every weeknight following the lives of teenagers and other more youthful folk on the fictional town of Hollyoaks near Chester. What has happened to the opening credits?

Holloaks new image

Hollyoaks has always been a favourite with the lads of this world mainly due to the amount of attractive young woman that the show has to offer. The show has always had a sort of ‘sex appeal’ to it with most characters played by – how can this be put – people who are more pleasing to the eye shall we say! However I think that this time with the change in the opening credits they have gone that one step to far.The new credits are portraying the cast and characters as sex symbols and using them as models rather than actual people in a soap. There are many younger people who are watching this show and I think that these opening credits give the show a bad name. From watching the opening credits you would get the impression that it is about the sexual exploits of the characters, whereas, although like any soap this comes into it slightly this is not the case for the most part. After all it airs at 1830 every night not 2230!

Bring back the old style credits and also the older style music. This new look just doesn’t suit!

ANOTHER LAZY SUNDAY

Written by Mark in General | No Comments »

Well today was another of those lazy Sunday’s that I have written about before. However this one was a little more eventful than any other. Well it was all down to “lets go for a walk”. I regretted every saying this afterwards!

A very wet Sunday

Having woken reasonably early (0900) for a Sunday the weather was fine but not sunny and it was also fairly warm. After breakfasting and drinking the morning brew whilst reading the Sunday rag, I suggested that we should go for a walk to collect my car. My car was at my parents, a good 2 hours walk away but we did intend going for the usually Sunday walk in the park anyway so it seemed a good idea.We set off as usual wrapped up in jackets etc. and the weather was fine. About half an hour into the journey and the heavens opened. The rain started pelting down and we were both thoroughly miserable. Two hours later we arrived at my parents house, hands freezing cold and we got ourselves in. Clothes went in the dryer and we made a brew.

We thought we would sit in front of the fire with our tea before heading off home in the car. However could we get the fire working? No. It took us about 15 minutes to work it out – very complicated mechanism or was it just two cold cheesed off bodies who couldn’t operate a simple gas fire? I leave the answer to your imagination.

So you can imagine the mood that put us in. It really did just set up another lazy Sunday at home, watching the TV (which for me wasn’t that bad as football was on all afternoon!).

ONE CHILLED OUT RABBIT!

Written by Mark in Animals & Wildlife | No Comments »

We tend to bring the rabbits in once every couple of days to sit with us so they get used to our presence. George on this occasion was getting a little too used to us!

George relaxing on my knee

I had in on my knee and then managed to turn him over onto his back. It was very strange as he just let me do it and then he sort of went into this trance. After about 2 minutes of stroking his tummy he suddenly jumped up, like he had come round again. Very strange!

TAKE THAT TICKETS SELL OUT

Written by Mark in General | 4 Comments »

Well it has happened again. Take That announce that they are doing more tour dates and low and be hold the tickets have sold out within hours. Why is this? Am I missing something and they are seriously that good?

Take That singing

Don’t get me wrong I think that take that are pretty good. When they were around 10 years ago I was a teenager (those were the days!!) and all our female friends were into them but not me. They do bring out some good songs and when they played with Leona Lewis on xFactor before Christmas I though they were very good. It is the lengths that people go to for tickets that bewilders me.

People become obsessed with getting tickets and to be honest no matter how much they cost they seem to want to buy them. People at work yesterday where willing to spend hours on the phone and hours sat at the internet trying to buy these tickets. The tactics were mainly to get a group that wanted to go and watch them and then everyone in the group tries to buy a ticket. I said to one person “well what if you are all successful and you all get four tickets?”. The reply was “it doesn’t matter do you know how much they sell for on eBay?”

This brings me along to the next point that I wanted to raise. Take That tickets have been on sale on eBay minutes after they were purchased and are now selling for literally thousands of pounds. Who on earth buys these things? They must have more money than sense! Even if it was a band that I desperately wanted to see there would be no way I would pay thousands for the tickets. The organizers could easily put a stop to this, by adding names to the tickets when they are sold and then you need ID to enter to concert which must of course match the ticket.
